Café Nocturne is a dansou themed cafe. Dansou, as defined by Jeffery's Japanese/English Dictionary is, the art of disguising oneself as a man. Café Nocturne follows in the footsteps of dansou culture by theming our cafe as a crossplay cafe.
Crossplay is the art of cosplaying/dressing up as a character that is of a different gender than one identifies with. Our staff will be made up of crossplay characters and characters that wish to express their gender through crossplay.
Cis-women, transmen, agendered, or other genders wishing to present as male through crossplay/dansou may be part of the butler staff that will be serving you.
The cafe also works to diversify our staff by including Gothic Lolitas or lolis for short. Cis-men, transwomen, agendered, or other genders wishing to present as female through crossplay/dansou may take part in the Lolita staff.
Through our history, we have had various gender identities joining with us with the knowledge, understanding, and approval of what crossplay and dansou means within Café Nocturne. Our format and status is with the full support and approval of the convention Anime North and its staffs and committees.
As of current, Café Nocturne functions out of the Canadian anime convention, Anime North (http://www.animenorth.com), in Toronto, Ontario, at the last weekend in May. At such time, the cafe provides an afternoon tea service for a fee of $20, accompanied by a show in which the butlers and lolis of the cafe interact with the patrons and each other. Each "seating" is an hour long, with half an hour between shows. There is a special showing that changes every year, called After Dark (also known as "AD"), and is at such time two hours long. This show changes from year to year and its time slot may change according to its theme. Café Nocturne provides the special AD show description yearly, and is not liable for having the same show in concurrent years.
